Restylane in Calgary

Restylaneat Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South.

Restylane is the longest-established range of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, in clinical use since 1996. Its products span firm gels for structure and flexible gels that move with expression. At Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South, Dr. Paul Kuzel, a board-certified dermatologist, selects the product and performs every injection himself.

What it is

Two gel technologies, one range.

All Restylane products are cross-linked hyaluronic acid, the same molecule the skin makes to hold water. What sets the range apart is that it is made with two different gel structures.

Firm gelsThe original Restylane technology produces a firm, particulate gel that holds its position precisely. It is used where lift and definition are wanted: the cheeks, the nose, the chin and the jaw.
Flexible gelsA newer technology produces a smoother, more flexible gel that stretches and recovers with facial movement. It is used where the face moves most: the lips, the folds around the mouth and the lines of the lower face, so the result is not visible when you smile or speak.
Reversible and gradualLike all hyaluronic acid fillers, Restylane can be dissolved with hyaluronidase within minutes if ever needed, and it is broken down slowly by the body over nine to eighteen months, so the result fades rather than ends.
The Restylane range

A product for each purpose.

Selecting the right product for the depth and the area is most of the skill. These are the products used at the clinic.

Firm

Lyft

The firm structural product, placed deep on the cheekbone for lift and in the back of the hands for volume. Lasts twelve to eighteen months.

Flexible, firm

Defyne

The firmest of the flexible gels, for deep nasolabial and marionette folds and for chin projection. Lasts twelve to eighteen months.

Flexible, soft

Refyne

The softest flexible gel, for fine to moderate lines around the mouth where the skin must keep moving naturally. Lasts about twelve months.

Lips

Kysse

A flexible gel made for the lips, giving shape and a natural feel that moves with speech and expression. Lasts up to twelve months.

Under eyes

Eyelight

A soft, low-swelling gel designed for the tear trough, placed deep in small amounts to lift the hollow without puffiness.

Skin quality

Skinboosters

Very soft hyaluronic acid injected in tiny deposits into the skin itself, on the face, neck, décolletage or hands, to improve hydration, texture and fine crepiness. Not a volumising product.

Why a dermatologist

Anatomy, safety and restraint.

Filler is placed among the arteries, nerves and muscles of the face. The result depends on where it goes and how much is used, and the risk depends on knowing what lies beneath.

Vascular safetyThe arteries of the face run close to the surface at the nose, between the brows, at the temples and in the lips. Filler injected into one can block it. Dr. Kuzel knows the anatomy, uses cannula where it is safer, and keeps hyaluronidase in the room.
Matching gel to movementA firm gel in a mobile area shows when you smile; a flexible gel on the cheekbone does not lift. Dr. Kuzel selects from both technologies according to how much the area moves.
RestraintMost overfilled faces come from treating the fold rather than its cause, or adding product year after year without reassessing. Dr. Kuzel treats the cause, uses the least product that achieves the aim, and reviews before adding.
CoverageRestylane is cosmetic and not covered by Alberta Health Care. Pricing is by syringe and is quoted at consultation before any treatment.

AssessmentDr. Kuzel assesses the face as a whole, at rest and in motion, and identifies what is causing the concern.
Plan and consentProduct, areas, amount, expected result, duration and risks. The price is confirmed before treatment.
InjectionTopical anaesthetic is applied; the product also contains lidocaine. Injection by needle or cannula, ten to thirty minutes.
Follow-upReview at two weeks once swelling has settled, with adjustment if needed.
Aftercare and safety

What to expect after injection.

Swelling and bruising are the normal side effects. Serious complications are rare and are managed immediately.

After treatment

  • Swelling for two to five days, more in the lips; bruising, if any, for up to a week
  • Firmness or small lumps in the first two weeks as the gel settles; massage only if instructed
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and pressure on the area for 24 to 48 hours
  • Postpone dental work for two weeks before and after
  • Makeup can be applied the next day
  • Contact the clinic immediately for skin that turns white, mottled or dusky, or unusual pain: these are signs of a blocked vessel and are treated at once
  • Not used in pregnancy, breastfeeding, or with active infection at the site

What to expect

Expected outcomes.

The result is visible immediately and looks its best at two weeks, once swelling has gone and the gel has integrated. The flexible products are chosen so that the result is not visible in motion: the face looks rested at rest and normal when it moves.

Duration depends on the product and the area. Lyft in the cheeks and Defyne in the chin and folds last twelve to eighteen months. Lips and fine lines last nine to twelve. Skinboosters are given as a course of two or three sessions and maintained every six months. The result fades slowly.

Filler does not treat pigment, texture or lines of expression. Those are treated with resurfacing, laser and neuromodulators, often in the same plan.

Questions

Questions about Restylane, answered.

How much does Restylane cost in Calgary?

Restylane is priced by syringe and quoted at consultation. The number of syringes depends on the area and the degree of volume loss; lips are usually one syringe, cheeks two or more. Call (403) 286-6888 for current pricing.

How long does Restylane last?

Nine to eighteen months depending on the product and area. Firm products in the cheeks and chin last longest; softer products in the lips and fine lines the least. The result fades gradually.

Restylane or Juvederm?

Both are hyaluronic acid ranges of comparable quality. Restylane offers both a firm, precise gel and a flexible gel that moves with expression, which makes it a strong choice around the mouth and in the lips. Dr. Kuzel uses both ranges and chooses by area and tissue rather than by brand.

Does it hurt?

Topical anaesthetic is applied before treatment, and Restylane products contain lidocaine, so discomfort is mild. Lips are the most sensitive area. Cannula injection, used where appropriate, reduces both discomfort and bruising.

Will it look natural?

When the right product is placed in the right plane in the right amount, yes. The flexible Restylane gels are made so that the result is not visible when you smile or speak. Dr. Kuzel treats the cause of the concern, uses the least product that achieves the aim, and reviews at two weeks before adding more.

Can it be reversed?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler is dissolved with hyaluronidase within minutes. This is used for the rare vascular complication and, less often, to correct a result the patient is unhappy with, including filler placed elsewhere.

What are the risks?

Swelling, bruising and temporary lumps are common and resolve. Infection and delayed nodules are uncommon. The serious risk is injection into a blood vessel, which is rare, is minimised by anatomical knowledge and technique, and is treated immediately with hyaluronidase.

What are Skinboosters?

Skinboosters are very soft hyaluronic acid injected into the skin in many tiny deposits rather than beneath it. They improve hydration, texture and fine crepiness on the face, neck, chest and hands. They do not add volume. A course of two or three sessions is followed by maintenance every six months.

Can I combine Restylane with Botox?

Yes, and the combination is common. Neuromodulators treat lines of expression; filler treats volume and structure. They address different problems and are often planned together.

Who performs the injections?

Dr. Paul Kuzel, MD FRCPC, a board-certified dermatologist and the founder and Medical Director of Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South, performs all injections personally. He sees patients in English and Czech.
