Botox at Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South, planned and injected by Dr. Paul Kuzel, a board-certified dermatologist. Real Botox Cosmetic. Conservative dosing. Specialist hands.
Every smile, every frown, every squint against the sun leaves a trace. What changes with age is not how much you move. It is how long the trace lasts.
A crease forms in skin the way it forms in paper. Fold it once and it flattens out. Fold it in the same place ten thousand times and the fold stops flattening, because the structure underneath has been remodelled around the fold.
Botox interrupts that at the source, which is the signal between nerve and muscle. Less signal means less contraction, and less contraction means the skin above is folded less often. It does not erase expression. It reduces the number of times the same crease is made.
That is why the treatment is at its most useful before a line has fully set, and why a line already etched at rest usually needs something alongside it rather than Botox on its own. Which of those two you are looking at is the first thing assessed at a consultation.
Botox is the same product everywhere. What differs is who decides where it goes, how much of it, and in which plane.
Botox is approved for a great deal more than forehead lines. The full range runs from the classic upper face triad through to conditions treated as medicine.
Where dynamic lines appear first, and where treating early pays the highest dividend.
Shaping the lower third, where the effect is as much contour as it is line softening.
Beyond the face, where the same mechanism treats posture, contour and sweating.
Health Canada approved for chronic conditions, and often eligible for extended health coverage when a physician administers it.
Twenty to thirty minutes at Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South, of which the injections themselves are about ten.
Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A. It temporarily blocks the release of acetylcholine at the junction between a motor nerve and the muscle it controls. Less signal, less contraction, less line.
The effect is local to where the product is placed and proportional to how much is used, which is why the same product in different hands produces very different faces. It wears off as the nerve terminals recover. Nothing is permanent and nothing accumulates in a way that waiting will not undo.
Botox has one of the longest safety records in medicine, and it is still a prescription drug injected into the face. A page that only lists benefits is not telling you enough to consent.
These resolve as the effect wears off. None of them are permanent, which is the reassuring part and also the reason a conservative first treatment is the right one.
Tell Dr. Kuzel about any neuromuscular condition, any recent course of antibiotics in the aminoglycoside family, and every medication and supplement you take. Botox is not given during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and it is not given where there is an active infection at the injection site.
Botox in Calgary is priced per unit, and most reputable clinics charge between $10 and $15 per unit. What you pay depends on how many units the area needs, which is a function of the muscle rather than the price list. Forehead lines take fewer units than a masseter. A quote is given at the consultation, before anything is scheduled. Be careful with pricing well below that range, because it usually means the product has been diluted or it is not Botox.
Three to four months for most people on most areas. Larger muscles like the masseter often hold longer. Duration varies with dose, muscle strength and metabolism, and it commonly lengthens once you have been treated consistently for a while, because the muscle gradually does less work.
Most people describe a brief pinch. The needle is very fine and each injection takes a second or two. Topical numbing is available if you would prefer it, and ice helps if you bruise easily.
Movement begins to soften at three to five days. The result is complete at about two weeks, which is when it should be judged and when any adjustment is made. Judging it at day three is the most common reason people think it has not worked.
Not when it is dosed conservatively and placed correctly. Frozen is a dosing and placement outcome, not an inherent property of the product. A first treatment is deliberately conservative for exactly this reason, because adding a small amount at the two week review is easy and removing it is not.
Both are botulinum toxin type A and both work the same way. They differ in the protein that surrounds the molecule, in how the units are measured, and in how far they diffuse from the injection point. Dysport spreads a little more, which suits some broad areas and not others. The choice is made per area and per patient rather than as a house preference.
It can be, and it depends on what your skin is actually doing rather than on your age. If lines are still fully dynamic, treating reduces how often the crease is folded and slows the point at which it sets. If there are no lines to speak of yet, there is nothing to prevent and you will be told so. This is a question worth asking a dermatologist rather than a price list.
Yes. Chronic migraine prevention, TMJ and jaw clenching, and hyperhidrosis of the underarms, palms or soles are all established medical uses, on established protocols. Because Dr. Kuzel is a physician, these are often eligible for extended health coverage. Bring your plan details to the consultation and it can be checked before you commit.
Trap tox is Botox into the upper trapezius, used to soften a bulky shoulder line and to relieve the tension that comes with it. It uses more units than a facial area because the muscle is much larger. It is safe in trained hands, and it is a treatment where knowing the anatomy matters, since the trapezius does real work holding your shoulder girdle and over-treating it causes weakness.
Yes. It is not given during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or where there is an active infection at the injection site. It needs caution with neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis or ALS, and with certain antibiotics. A previous allergic reaction to botulinum toxin rules it out. Any of these is a reason to have the conversation, not necessarily a reason you cannot be treated.

Every plan begins with a consultation. Your anatomy is mapped, your goals are discussed, and a plan is built before any treatment is scheduled.
