A harmless mole that you would rather not have can be removed in minutes under local anaesthetic, by shave or by excision, with the technique chosen for the smallest possible mark. Every mole is examined with a dermatoscope before it is touched, and every mole is sent to pathology afterward, because a cosmetic mole is only a cosmetic mole once the report says so. Medical and cosmetic mole removal use the same techniques. The difference is the goal: a medical removal is planned around the margin, a cosmetic one around the mark it leaves.
Two techniques cover every mole. A third, laser, is offered elsewhere and is the one to avoid.
Best mark for a raised mole, especially on the face. Some pigment can regrow at the base and is harmless, but is examined if it appears.
Complete removal with no regrowth, at the cost of a fine line. Chosen for flat moles and any mole where the whole thing must reach the pathologist.
Laser destroys the tissue a pathologist needs, can leave pigment that later mimics melanoma, and has no way to tell whether the mole was benign. Moles are not lasered here.
CO2 laser lesion removalA mole in a place where the scar would be more visible than the mole is sometimes best left. Dr. Kuzel says so when that is the case.
Freckles and molesThe risk in cosmetic mole removal is not the scar. It is the melanoma that was called a mole and shaved off without a report.

A shave site kept moist heals with the least mark. A dried scab heals with more.
Cosmetic mole removal is not covered by Alberta Health Care. It is priced per mole by size, site and technique, with a lower price for additional moles in the same session, and quoted at consultation. Removal of a changing, bleeding or suspicious mole is medical and covered with a referral.

A shave leaves a flat, slightly pale or pink circle the size of the mole, which fades over six to twelve months until it is hard to find. An excision leaves a fine line, pink for a few months and pale by a year. On the face both heal well; on the chest, shoulders and back the mark is more visible.
A shaved mole occasionally regrows some pigment at the base. It is harmless, and is examined if it appears. An excised mole does not return.
The pathology report confirms the mole was benign. In the rare case it was not, the site is re-excised with the appropriate margin, which is exactly why every mole is sent.
