What it is

A Canadian-made hyaluronic acid filler.

Revanesse is manufactured in Ontario and has been in use in Canada for over a decade. Like Juvederm and Restylane, it is cross-linked hyaluronic acid, the molecule the skin uses to hold water.

A uniform gelRevanesse is made with spherical, evenly sized gel particles. In practice that produces a smooth, consistent flow through the needle or cannula, an even result in the tissue, and, in many patients, less swelling in the first days after treatment.
Volume and structurePlaced on bone or deep in the fat of the face, the firmer products replace the volume lost with age. Placed more superficially, the softer products fill a fold, define the lip or soften a fine line.
Reversible and gradualLike all hyaluronic acid fillers, Revanesse can be dissolved with hyaluronidase within minutes if ever needed, and it is broken down slowly by the body over nine to eighteen months, so the result fades rather than ends.
The Revanesse range

A product for each depth.

The products differ in firmness. Selecting the right one for the depth and the area is most of the skill.

Firm

Contour

The structural product, placed deep on the cheekbone, chin and jawline for lift and definition. Lasts twelve to eighteen months.

Firm

Shape

For deep volume loss in the midface and temples where a firm, long-lasting gel is wanted.

Medium

Ultra

The all-purpose product for nasolabial folds, marionette lines and moderate volume, and for lips where a fuller shape is wanted. Lasts nine to twelve months.

Lips

Kiss

Made for the lips, giving shape, border and hydration with a soft, natural feel and comparatively little swelling.

Soft

Redexis

The finest gel, for superficial lines around the mouth and eyes and for skin hydration.

Alternatives

Other hyaluronic acid fillers

Juvederm and Restylane are comparable ranges with their own characteristics. Dr. Kuzel uses all three and selects by area and patient.

Why a dermatologist

Anatomy, safety and restraint.

Filler is placed among the arteries, nerves and muscles of the face. The result depends on where it goes and how much is used, and the risk depends on knowing what lies beneath.

Vascular safetyThe arteries of the face run close to the surface at the nose, between the brows, at the temples and in the lips. Filler injected into one can block it. Dr. Kuzel knows the anatomy, uses cannula where it is safer, and keeps hyaluronidase in the room.
Product selectionEach area has a product suited to it. Soft product in the cheek does not lift; firm product in the lip looks and feels wrong. Dr. Kuzel has the whole range on hand and chooses for the tissue.
RestraintMost overfilled faces come from treating the fold rather than its cause, or adding product year after year without reassessing. Dr. Kuzel treats the cause, uses the least product that achieves the aim, and reviews before adding.
CoverageRevanesse is cosmetic and not covered by Alberta Health Care. Pricing is by syringe and is quoted at consultation before any treatment.

Aftercare and safety

What to expect after injection.

Swelling and bruising are the normal side effects, and are often milder with Revanesse. Serious complications are rare and are managed immediately.

After treatment

  • Swelling for one to four days, more in the lips; bruising, if any, for up to a week
  • Firmness or small lumps in the first two weeks as the gel settles; massage only if instructed
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and pressure on the area for 24 to 48 hours
  • Postpone dental work for two weeks before and after
  • Makeup can be applied the next day
  • Contact the clinic immediately for skin that turns white, mottled or dusky, or unusual pain: these are signs of a blocked vessel and are treated at once
  • Not used in pregnancy, breastfeeding, or with active infection at the site

What to expect

Expected outcomes.

The result is visible immediately and looks its best at two weeks, once swelling has gone and the gel has integrated. Because Revanesse tends to swell less, many patients are presentable within a day or two, which suits treatment before an event.

Duration depends on the product and the area. Contour in the cheeks, chin and jaw lasts twelve to eighteen months. Ultra in the folds and Kiss in the lips last nine to twelve. The result fades slowly, and many patients top up before it has gone rather than starting again.

Filler does not treat pigment, texture or lines of expression. Those are treated with resurfacing, laser and neuromodulators, often in the same plan.

Questions

Questions about Revanesse, answered.

How much does Revanesse cost in Calgary?

Revanesse is priced by syringe and quoted at consultation. The number of syringes depends on the area and the degree of volume loss; lips are usually one syringe, cheeks two or more. Call (403) 286-6888 for current pricing.

How long does Revanesse last?

Nine to eighteen months depending on the product and area. Firm products in the cheeks, chin and jaw last longest; softer products in the lips and fine lines the least. The result fades gradually.

Revanesse, Juvederm or Restylane?

All three are hyaluronic acid ranges of comparable quality. Revanesse is Canadian-made and is noted for a smooth gel and less swelling, which makes it a good choice for lips and for patients with an event soon after treatment. Dr. Kuzel uses all three ranges and chooses by area and tissue rather than by brand.

Does it hurt?

Topical anaesthetic is applied before treatment, and Revanesse products contain lidocaine, so discomfort is mild. Lips are the most sensitive area. Cannula injection, used where appropriate, reduces both discomfort and bruising.

Will it look natural?

When the right product is placed in the right plane in the right amount, yes. Dr. Kuzel treats the cause of the concern rather than the fold itself, uses the least product that achieves the aim, and reviews at two weeks before adding more.

Can it be reversed?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler is dissolved with hyaluronidase within minutes. This is used for the rare vascular complication and, less often, to correct a result the patient is unhappy with, including filler placed elsewhere.

What are the risks?

Swelling, bruising and temporary lumps are common and resolve. Infection and delayed nodules are uncommon. The serious risk is injection into a blood vessel, which is rare, is minimised by anatomical knowledge and technique, and is treated immediately with hyaluronidase.

Is Revanesse approved in Canada?

Yes. Revanesse is manufactured in Ontario and is approved by Health Canada. It has been in clinical use in Canada for over a decade and is also approved in the United States and Europe.

Can I combine Revanesse with Botox?

Yes, and the combination is common. Neuromodulators treat lines of expression; filler treats volume and structure. They address different problems and are often planned together.

Who performs the injections?

Dr. Paul Kuzel, MD FRCPC, a board-certified dermatologist and the founder and Medical Director of Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South, performs all injections personally. He sees patients in English and Czech.
