Dysport is a botulinum toxin approved in Canada for the frown lines between the brows and used across the upper face to soften lines of expression. It works in the same way as Botox, with a slightly faster onset and a softer spread. At Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South, every injection is performed by Dr. Paul Kuzel, a board-certified dermatologist.
Dysport is the brand name for abobotulinumtoxinA, a purified botulinum toxin type A. It has been approved in Canada since 2009 and in clinical use worldwide for over two decades.
The approved indication is the frown lines between the brows. The other areas are established uses, chosen at consultation.
The vertical lines between the brows produced by the corrugator and procerus muscles. The most common reason for treatment and the area where Dysport was first approved.
Horizontal lines produced by the frontalis muscle. Dysport's wider spread suits this broad, flat muscle. Dose is balanced against the frown lines so the brow does not drop.
Lines fanning from the outer corner of the eye on smiling, from the orbicularis oculi. Small doses placed away from the lid margin.
Relaxing the muscles that pull the brow down produces a subtle lift of the outer brow, opening the eye.
Lines across the bridge of the nose, dimpling of the chin, and the vertical bands of the neck. Treated where they contribute to the patient's concern.
Botulinum toxin is also used for hyperhidrosis, chronic migraine and jaw clenching. Those protocols are described on their own pages.
Excessive sweatingA good result from Dysport is one that nobody notices. It depends on knowing the muscles of the face, how they balance one another, and how much to give each.
Both are botulinum toxin type A. The differences are small and practical, and either is a reasonable choice for most patients.
Effect at two to three days for Dysport, three to five for Botox. Both peak at about two weeks. The difference matters to patients treating before an event.
This is an advantage on the forehead, where a broad muscle is treated with fewer injections, and a consideration near the eye, where precision matters and Botox is sometimes preferred.
About two and a half to three Dysport units do the work of one Botox unit. Prices per unit reflect this, so the cost of treating an area is usually similar. Compare by area, not by unit.
Both last three to four months at standard doses. Some patients find one lasts longer for them; that is individual and is discovered by trying each.
BotoxA Dysport appointment takes about twenty minutes. Treatment is usually performed at the first visit.
Side effects are minor and short-lived when the product is placed correctly. The instructions below reduce them further.
No referral is needed for cosmetic treatment. Dysport is quoted at consultation, and the price is confirmed before anything is injected.

Lines of expression soften noticeably within a week and are at their smoothest at two weeks. Lines that are present at rest, from years of folding, improve over several treatment cycles as the skin stops being creased, and may not disappear entirely; those are treated with filler or resurfacing alongside.
The face still moves. The aim is to reduce the force of the expression that creates the line, not to remove expression. Patients who want a softer result are given a lower dose, and patients who want more can be topped up at the two-week review.
Effect lasts three to four months. Repeat treatment at that interval maintains the result, and the interval often lengthens with regular use.
Both are botulinum toxin type A and work in the same way. Dysport is formulated differently, takes effect a day or two sooner, spreads slightly further, and is dosed in different units. For most patients the results are equivalent. Dr. Kuzel uses both and recommends according to the area and the patient.
Dysport is quoted at consultation, by area or by unit. Because Dysport units are smaller than Botox units, the per-unit price is lower and the cost of treating an area is usually similar. Call (403) 286-6888 for current pricing.
Effect begins at two to three days and is complete at two weeks. Patients treating before an event should book at least two weeks ahead.
Three to four months at standard doses. Regular treatment weakens the muscle over time and the interval often lengthens.
Not when dosed correctly. Dr. Kuzel treats the muscles that create the line while leaving the rest of the face moving, and doses conservatively at a first treatment, with a top-up at two weeks if more is wanted.
The injections are very fine and take a few minutes. Most patients describe a brief pinch. No anaesthetic is needed; a cold pack is available.
Bruising and a brief headache are the common side effects. Uncommonly, product affects a neighbouring muscle and causes temporary drooping of an eyelid or brow, which resolves over weeks. Serious reactions are rare. Dysport is not used in pregnancy, breastfeeding, or with certain neuromuscular conditions.
Yes. Some patients prefer Dysport on the forehead and Botox around the eyes. The products can be combined at the same visit.
No. Cosmetic Dysport can be booked directly. Medical uses of botulinum toxin, such as hyperhidrosis and chronic migraine, are covered differently and are described on those pages.
