Fraxel is a fractional laser that resurfaces the skin in thousands of microscopic columns, leaving the skin between them intact so it heals in days rather than weeks. It treats sun damage, texture, fine lines, acne scars and pigment, and one of its two wavelengths also clears precancerous actinic keratoses. At Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South, Dr. Paul Kuzel, a board-certified dermatologist, sets and performs every treatment himself.
Fraxel Dual carries two lasers in one handpiece. Each is fractional, treating a grid of tiny columns and sparing the skin around them, and each is non-ablative, heating the skin rather than removing it. The surface stays intact and recovery is short.
The clinic offers resurfacing at three intensities. The choice is a trade between result per session and downtime per session.
A gentler fractional laser from the same family. A day of redness, a course of four to six sessions. For maintenance, early sun damage, and patients who cannot take downtime.
Clear + BrilliantThree to five days of redness and bronzing, three to five sessions. The workhorse for moderate sun damage, acne scars, texture and actinic keratoses, with a result that lasts years.
Ablative: it removes columns of skin. A week to ten days of downtime, usually one session. For deep wrinkles, severe sun damage and deep scars.
CO2 laser resurfacingIsolated brown spots and redness are often better treated by a pigment laser or a vascular laser than by resurfacing. Dr. Kuzel chooses the tool for the finding.
PicoWayA laser is only as safe as the judgement of the person setting it. Energy, density and wavelength are chosen for the skin in front of the physician, not from a preset.
Fraxel is used on the face, neck, chest, hands and, for scars, the body.
Brown spots, blotchy tone and the fine crepe of photoageing on the face, chest, arms and hands. Usually one to three sessions.
Sun damageField treatment of scattered precancerous patches across a whole area, as an alternative to cryotherapy of each spot or to photodynamic therapy.
Actinic keratosisRolling and shallow boxcar scars respond well to a course of three to five sessions. Deep ice-pick scars need CO2 or surgical treatment first.
Acne scarringCrow's feet, fine lines around the mouth, enlarged pores and rough texture. Improvement builds over a course.
Fine lines and wrinklesSoftens the texture and colour of mature scars and striae. Best started once a scar has settled.
Scar revisionLow-energy 1927 nm treatment is used in selected patients with melasma alongside prescription treatment, and never as the first step. Discussed at consultation.
MelasmaA Fraxel session takes about ninety minutes including an hour of numbing cream. Treatment is booked after consultation.
Fraxel has predictable downtime. The skin looks sunburnt for a few days, then bronzed and rough as the treated columns shed, then new.

Pigment responds fastest. Sun spots darken for a few days and shed with the bronzing, so the skin is visibly clearer within two weeks of the first session. Texture, lines and scars respond to collagen remodelling, which builds for three to six months after each session. The full result of a course is assessed at three months after the last.
For sun damage and actinic keratoses, one to three sessions usually suffice and the result lasts years with sun protection. For acne scars and texture, three to five sessions produce a meaningful but not complete improvement; scars soften rather than disappear.
Fraxel does not lift, does not remove deep wrinkles in one pass, and does not treat redness or broken capillaries. CO2, neuromodulators and vascular laser do those where needed.

Three to five days of visible recovery: two to four days of redness and swelling, then bronzing and a rough texture as the treated skin sheds by about day seven. Most patients work from home for two or three days and wear makeup from day three.
With an hour of numbing cream and cold air during treatment, most patients describe heat and prickling rather than pain. The skin feels sunburnt for a few hours afterward.
Yes, with adjusted settings and preparation. Darker skin has a higher risk of temporary pigmentation after any resurfacing, so energy and density are reduced, a lightening cream is used before and after, and sun protection is strict. Dr. Kuzel assesses skin type at consultation.
Clear + Brilliant is lighter: a day of redness, more sessions, a subtler result. Fraxel is stronger: a few days of downtime, fewer sessions, a larger result. Clear + Brilliant is often used to maintain a Fraxel result.
CO2 removes columns of skin and produces a larger result in one session with a week or more of downtime. Fraxel heats the skin without removing it and spreads the result over a course with short downtime each time. Deep wrinkles and deep scars favour CO2; most other indications favour Fraxel.
Yes. The 1927 nm wavelength is a recognised field treatment for scattered precancerous sun damage, and improves the appearance of the surrounding skin at the same time. Dr. Kuzel follows treated skin as he would after any precancer treatment.
Pigment clears within two weeks of the first session. Texture, lines and scars improve over three to six months as collagen remodels, and the full result of a course is assessed at three months after the last session.
