Thermage FLX is a radiofrequency skin tightening treatment. It heats the deep layer of the skin in one session, without needles or downtime, and the collagen response that follows tightens loose skin on the face, around the eyes, on the neck and on the body over the next six months. At Rejuvenation Dermatology Calgary South, Dr. Paul Kuzel, a board-certified dermatologist, assesses every patient and tells them plainly whether Thermage is the right tool.
Radiofrequency energy passes through the skin and heats the dermis and the fibrous layer beneath it to a temperature at which collagen contracts and, over months, rebuilds. The surface is cooled throughout, so nothing is broken and nothing needs to heal.
Loose skin has several treatments, and they are not interchangeable. The honest comparison is by how much tightening you need and how much downtime you will accept.
One session, no needles, no recovery. Mild to moderate laxity. Gradual tightening over six months; repeat every one to two years. The only option for the eyelids.
Needles deliver radiofrequency into the dermis directly. Three sessions, a few days of redness each. Tightens and also improves texture, scars and pores. Deeper heating in the mid-dermis.
RF microneedlingLoose skin is often lost volume. A collagen stimulator rebuilds the foundation over months and is frequently combined with Thermage for laxity with hollowing.
SculptraSignificant jowls, heavy neck skin and marked eyelid hooding need a surgeon. Dr. Kuzel says so at consultation rather than selling an energy treatment that will disappoint.
Thermage produces a real but modest tightening. The value of a dermatologist is in choosing patients who will be pleased with it, and steering the others somewhere better.
Thermage is used wherever skin has loosened: early jowls, hooded eyelids, a softening jawline, crepey neck and the loose skin of the body after weight loss or pregnancy.
Early jowling and a softening jawline in patients in their forties and fifties. The most common indication.
Skin laxityHooded upper lids and crepey lower lids, treated with the eye tip over a protective shield. The only non-surgical option for upper eyelid skin.
Crepey neck skin and mild fullness under the chin. Combined with Belkyra where the fullness is fat.
Double chinLoose skin after pregnancy or weight loss, and the upper arms. Improves crepe and mild laxity; does not replace surgery for excess skin.
Body treatmentsCrepey skin above the knees and on the inner thighs, often combined with fat reduction where there is both.
CoolSculptingJawline and neck tightening with no downtime and no visible sign of treatment.

Some patients see slight tightening immediately from collagen contraction. The real result builds over two to six months as new collagen forms, and is assessed at six months. The change is firmer, smoother skin and a cleaner jawline or eyelid, in the range a colleague notices you look rested rather than a stranger notices you look different.
The result lasts one to two years depending on age and skin, and is maintained with a repeat session. Patients with mild laxity and good collagen respond best; patients with heavy, thin or sun-damaged skin respond less.
Thermage does not remove fat, does not add volume, and does not replace a facelift or blepharoplasty. Where those are what is needed, Dr. Kuzel says so.

One. Results build over six months and last one to two years, and a repeat session maintains them.
Each pulse is a brief deep heat with cooling before and after and vibration throughout. Most patients describe it as intense warmth rather than pain. You rate the heat during treatment and the energy is adjusted. No anaesthetic is needed.
No. The skin is pink and slightly swollen for a few hours. Work, exercise and makeup are fine the same day.
Thermage for no downtime, one session, and the eyelids. RF microneedling for a larger tightening with a few days of recovery per session, and where texture, pores or scars also need work. Dr. Kuzel recommends by the degree of laxity and the downtime you will accept.
Yes. It is the only non-surgical treatment for upper eyelid laxity, performed with a small tip over a protective shield. It tightens mild to moderate hooding; heavy hooding needs surgery.
One to two years, depending on age, skin quality and sun exposure. A repeat session maintains the result.
Yes. Radiofrequency does not target pigment, so Thermage is safe across all skin types without adjustment for colour.
Yes. The change is gradual, comes from your own collagen, and tightens what is there rather than adding or moving anything. Patients describe looking rested or firmer rather than different.
