Female patient receives radio frequency (RF) microneedling treatment to improve moisture, collagen and elastin.

radio frequency (RF) microneedling

Moisture, collagen and elastin. They’re the holy trinity of radiant, healthy-looking skin. As we age, our skin contains less of all three, which means more fine lines and wrinkles, rougher texture and a dull quality to the skin.

Enter radio frequency microneedling, which uses tiny needles to penetrate the skin, triggering the production of collagen and elastin for smoother, firmer, more toned skin. The added radio frequency helps speed the healing process and amplifies collagen and elastin more than traditional microneedling.

Learn how RF Microneedling works

During the treatment, a cluster of microneedles penetrates the skin to create tiny channels. The radio frequency energy is applied to the skin through the needles, heating the underlying tissue and kickstarting collagen and elastin production. This process helps to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and acne scars, as well as tighten and firm the skin.

Despite its name (needling!), microneedling is minimally invasive and requires little downtime. Patients can expect their treatment area to feel and look sunburned and a bit swollen immediately afterwards. This will fade in a day or two, and your skin will become dry as it heals. Patients typically notice an improvement in their skin's texture and tone about three to four weeks after the treatment. Over time, the skin will continue to improve as collagen production increases. Peak results occur at four to six weeks post-procedure.

Many patients opt for three or more treatments, four to six weeks apart, then maintain those results with a touch-up treatment once or twice a year.

What to expect from your treatment

We will cleanse the treatment area and apply topical numbing medication. Once this takes effect (about an hour), we’ll remove the cream and disinfect the skin before beginning the procedure.

We will use a specialized, handheld device featuring a sterile tip with tiny needles to create small punctures in the skin. The depth of the needles can be adjusted to target specific areas of the skin. While the needles create micro-injuries to trigger regrowth, radio frequency energy is delivered into the deeper layers of the skin to stimulate collagen and elastin production. We’ll make several passes over the treatment area to ensure optimal results.

After the procedure, we’ll apply a soothing serum called Alastin Nectar to help calm the skin and promote healing.

The entire procedure typically takes about 30-60 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. The number of treatments required can vary depending on your goals and skin condition, but most patients see optimal results after 3-4 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart.

Avoid sun exposure and use high-quality sunscreen for several weeks after the procedure. We also recommend that you avoid wearing make-up and any strenuous exercise for 24 hours following your treatment.

We’ll send you home with information on what to do and look for after the procedure. About a week after your appointment, we’ll check in to see how you’re doing. If this is your first treatment, Dr. Kuzel or his team will set a follow-up to assess your results. You can always call or email us too!

How to prepare for your treatment

At your consultation, Dr. Kuzel will ask questions about your medical history and expectations and provide instructions on how to prepare for the procedure. If you have active acne breakouts, you may be asked to take oral antibiotics. If you have a history of cold sores, you might need to take an oral antiviral medication.

Sun exposure can make your skin more sensitive, so it's important to avoid direct sun exposure for at least two weeks before your procedure. If you need to go outside, wear protective clothing and use high-quality sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

Blood thinners can increase the risk of bleeding during the procedure. Your healthcare provider may advise you to stop taking these medications before your procedure. Before your visit, you should stop taking all NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications) such as aspirin, as well as herbal supplements and alcohol one week prior.
